Walter Carl Becker was an American musician, songwriter and record producer February 20, 1950 – September 3, 2017. He was the co-founder, drummer, bassist and co-songwriter of Steely Dan, the jazz rock band.

Walter Carl Becker was an American musician, songwriter and record producer February 20, 1950 – September 3, 2017. He was the co-founder, drummer, bassist and co-songwriter of Steely Dan, the jazz rock band.

Becker met Donald Fagen, a potential songwriting partner, when they were Bard College students. After a short time in New York City, the two moved to Los Angeles in 1971 to form the center of Steely Dan, who enjoyed a productive 10-year critical and commercial career.

After the breakup of the group, Becker moved to Hawaii and the his musical practice. In 1985 he became a brief member of the Chinese Crisis English band, producing and playing synthesis on the Flaunt the Imperfection album.

In 1993, Becker and Fagen reunited Steely Dan and stayed involved, recording the four Grammy nominated Two Against Nature (2000). Becker released 11 tracks from Whack (1994) and Circus Money (2008) for two solo albums.

He died on September 3, 2017 after a brief battle against esophageal cancer.
