Ueli Steck was a Swiss rock climber and mountaineer, born 4 October 1976 to 30 April 2017. Through his notoriously challenging South Face, he was the first to climb Annapurna solo and set speed records on the Alps' North Face trilogy He won two awards for Piolet d'Or, in 2009 and 2014. Having previously summitted Mount Everest, Steck died on April 30, 2017 after falling for an attempt on the Hornbein route on Everest 's West Ridge without supplementary oxygen during an acclimatizing climb.
