Ayn Rand was a Russian-American author and philosopher, born Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum, 2 January 20] 1905 – 6 March 1982). She is known for her two best-selling novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and she named Objectivism for the development of a philosophical system. She was born in Russia, coming to the USA in 1926. In the years 1935 and 1936 she had a play produced on Broadway. She gained fame with her 1943 novel The Fountainhead, after two early novels which were initially unsuccessful. Rand published her most popular book, the novel Atlas Shrugged, in 1957. She subsequently turned to non-fiction to promote her philosophy, publishing her own periodicals and publishing several essay collections until her death in 1982.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (January 3, 1892-September 2, 1973) was a novelist, poet, philologist, and academic from England. He was the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, a classic high fantasy work. He served as the Anglo-Saxon Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor and Fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford, from 1925 to 1945 and Merton Professor of English Language and Literature and Merton College Fellow, Oxford, from 1945 to 1959. He had been a close associate of C at one time. S. Lewis — both were members of the Inklings, an informal literary discussion party. On 28 March 1972 Queen Elizabeth II appointed Tolkien Commander of the Order of the British Empire. His son Christopher published a series of works after Tolkien's death, based on detailed notes from his father and unfinished manuscripts like The Silmarillion.
