At the Temple of Apollo, Plutarch (AD 46–after 119) was a Greek Middle Platonist philosopher, biographer, essayist, and priest. He is chiefly known for his Parallel Lives and Moralia. He was called Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, after he became a Roman citizen. Plutarch was born into a prominent family in Chaeronea, a small town about 80 kilometers (50 mi ) east of Delphi, in the Boeotia region of Greece. His family was affluent. Plutarch's father's name hasn't been preserved, but based on the common Greek custom of repeating a name in alternate generations, it was probably Nikarchus (Náloga-Paula-Paula).
