Swami Vivekananda (January 12, 1863 – July 4, 1902), born Narendranath Datta, was an Indian Hindu monk, chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna of the 19th century. He was a key figure in spreading Vedanta and Yoga 's Indian philosophies to the Western world, and is credited with increasing consciousness of interfaith, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion in the late 19th century. He was a significant force in the revival of Hinduism in India and contributed to the idea of Indian nationalism as an instrument of rebellion against the British Empire in colonial India.[9] Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is perhaps best known for his speech that started with the words "Sisters and Brothers of America …" in which he presented Hinduism at the Parli.
