What is Illusion?

Illusion is a distortion of the senses that may expose how the human brain naturally organizes and interprets sensory stimuli. While illusions distort our view of reality, they are commonly shared by most people.

Illusions that occur in any human sense, but visual illusions (optical illusions) are better recognized and understood. Emphasis is focused on visual illusions because vision frequently exceeds the other senses.

For example , individuals watching the ventriloquist can see the voice coming from the dummy, as they can see the dummy ‘s mouth with the words. Most perceptions are based on general assumptions made by the brain during perception.

Such observations are made using organizational concepts ( e.g. Gestalt theory), the individual’s capacity for deep perception and motion perception, and perceptual constancy.

Many phenomena occur because of biological sensory systems within the human body or out-of-body experiences within one’s physical environment. The term illusion refers to a particular form of sensory distortion.

In comparison to hallucination, which is a distortion in the absence of a stimulus, delusion defines a misinterpretation of true sensation.
