What is Politics?

Politics (from Greek) is the set of activities related to group decision making or other forms of power relationships between individuals, such as resource distribution.

The academic policy study is called political science. Politics is a word with many facets. It can be used positively in the context of a “political solution” that is compromising and non-violent, or described as “government art or science,” but often carries a negative connotation as well.

For example, the abolitionist Wendell Phillips declared that “we don’t play politics; anti-slavery isn’t half-jest with us.” The concept has been defined in different ways, and different approaches have fundamentally different views as to whether it should be used extensively or limited, empirically or normatively, and as to whether conflict or cooperation is more important to it.

Politics employs a variety of methods, including promoting one’s own political views among people, negotiating with other political subjects, making laws, and exercising force, including fighting against adversaries.

Politics is exercised at a wide range of social levels, from clans and tribes of traditional societies to modern local governments, businesses , and institutions. People also form political parties in modern nation states, to reflect their ideas.

Group members also tend to take the same position on certain topics and tend to endorse the same reforms to the law and the same leadership. An election is usually a multiparty competition.

A political system is a framework within a society that defines acceptable political methods. The history of political thinking can be traced back to the early antiquity, with works like Plato’s Republic, Aristotle ‘s Politics, Chanakya’s Arthashastra and Chanakya Niti (3rd Century BCE), as well as Confucius’s works.
