What is Forgiveness?

Forgiveness is the deliberate and voluntary mechanism by which a victim undergoes an offense-related shift of feelings and behaviors and overcomes negative emotions such as anger and revenge (although justified).

Nevertheless, scholars vary in the degree to which they think redemption often means that negative feelings are replaced with positive attitudes ( i.e. an improved desire to wish the perpetrator well).

Forgiveness is different from condoning (failing to see the crime as wrong and in need of forgiveness), excusing (not keeping the perpetrator accountable for the crime), forgetting (removing memory of the offense from consciousness), forgiving (given by a representative of community, such as a judge, for an admitted offense), and reconciliation (restoring relationship).

The effects of redemption have been discussed as a psychological principle and virtue in religious thought, social sciences, and medicine. Forgiveness may be viewed solely in terms of the person who forgives, like self forgiveness, the person forgiven, or the relationship between the forgiver and the person forgiven.

Forgiveness is granted in most cases without the intention of restorative justice, and without any response on the part of the perpetrator (for example, one can forgive an incommunicado or deceased person).

Practically speaking, it may be appropriate for the perpetrator to provide some sort of acknowledgment, an apology, or even even to seek forgiveness, so that the perpetrator may also feel that they can forgive themselves.

The social and political aspects of pardon include the purely private and religious “forgiveness” sphere. Within the political arena the concept of “forgiveness” is usually considered uncommon. Hannah Arendt, however, takes the view that the “Faculty of Reconciliation” has its place in public relations.

In the face of the irreparable, the philosopher assumes that redemption will free capital individually as well as collectively.

In an inquiry into the discourses and traditions of pardon after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, sociologist Benoit Guillou highlighted the extreme polysemy (multiple meanings) of the term “forgiveness” but also the eminently political character of the nation.

The author suggests four key figures of forgiveness by way of the end of his research to better explain, on the one hand, vague uses and, on the other hand, the conditions under which forgiveness will mediate a re-establishment of social relations.

Many world religions contain teachings on the essence of forgiveness, and many of these teachings underlie many different modern-day rituals and forgiveness practices.

Some religious doctrines or philosophies place greater emphasis on the need for human beings to find some kind of divine forgiveness for their weaknesses, others place greater emphasis on the need for human beings to practice one another’s forgiveness, yet others make little or no distinction between human and divine pardon.

The word forgiveness can be used interchangeably, and is viewed by individuals and cultures in several different ways.

This is especially important in relational communication, since forgiveness is a key component of reconciliation and the overall development as an person and couple or community. If all parties have a mutual view for pardon then a relationship can be maintained.

“Knowing the context of forgiveness, exploring the biology of forgiveness, and teaching people to become more forgiving all suggest a common definition for the word.”
