EU Quotes:

The U.S. couldn’t even get rid of Saddam Hussein. And we all know that the EU is just a passing fad. They’ll be killing each other again in less than a year. I’m sick to death of all these fascist lawsuits.

Bill Gates

2018 is an incredibly important election year, not just with the important midterms here in the U.S., but you just had the Mexican elections. You have Brazil. You have India coming up at the beginning of next year. There’s an assortment of elections around the EU. We’re very serious about this. We know that we need to get this right.

Mark Zuckerberg

Of course the EU and member states must work to ensure that people moving from one country to another understand their obligations and their rights in areas like health, road safety and further education.

John Bruton

If the EU and the US can cooperate successfully on regulating financial markets, everyone else will follow.

John Bruton

The EU and the U.S. often work together to develop international standards. This is the case in fighting terrorism and transnational crime, advancing trade liberalization, and combating piracy and intellectual property violations.

John Bruton

Serbia stands firmly on the EU path.

Ivica Dacic

To be in the EU, it means to have same rules of… for economy, for social life, to be together in the majority of European countries.

Aleksander Kwasniewski

NATO and the EU have also agreed on permanent arrangements on consultation and cooperation between themselves.

Lord Robertson

One has to explain to people that the EU in this form is the answer both to 1945 and to the 21st century, in a dramatically altered world with new heavyweights, and that Germany benefits from the continued integration of Europe in political, economic and societal ways. And, of course, that means the Germans will have to pay.

Peer Steinbruck

But Iran has gone far beyond what is necessary for a purely civilian programme. It has concealed several nuclear facilities from the International Atomic Energy Agency, played hide-and-seek with the international community, and rejected all offers of co-operation from the U.S., the EU, and others.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen

I have also been saddened, though hardly surprised, by the weakness of the EU’s reaction to the criminal attack on the Danish embassy in Syria, which seems to have been permitted, if not actively encouraged, by the Syrian regime.

Timothy Garton Ash

After saying yes to Turkey, the EU is having difficulty finding clear and consistent grounds for saying no to other, still more remote candidates – but being in the general vicinity of Europe does seem to be a continuing requirement.

Timothy Garton Ash

Everyone should respect the sovereignty of the EU countries.

Evangelos Venizelos

In the EU you have half a billion people who share a common belief in democracy, in rights, in the kind of economic life we want.

Catherine Ashton

Croatia did not want Europe to be divided as to the start of Croatia’s EU entry talks.

Stjepan Mesic

A two-speed Europe will not be a strong Europe. The idea of making decisions and policies in a narrow circle, disregarding smaller EU members, will make it hard to engage them to commit to a common policy, which will weaken the union.

Georgi Parvanov

The views of the European Union are fully reflected in this text, particularly the key objective of the EU, namely vigorously to address the disarmament of Iraq and to do so within the framework of the UN Security Council.

Javier Solana

Most British people are keen to remain in a European free trade zone; and most EU states are keen to keep us there, because we buy from them more than we sell to them to the tune of £40 million per day.

Daniel Hannan

The idea seems to be to use the next treaty talks to strike a grand bargain: Britain will be helpful to those states wishing to establish a fiscal union among themselves if, in exchange, we can amicably derogate from the aspects of the EU which we dislike.

Daniel Hannan

My vision is that our country should be integrated in the EU, to transfer a part of our independence there. It is also our duty to do it, if we want to establish trade and a sound economy. This is the vision that I am working on and I will continue to work in the future.

Ibrahim Rugova

My vision is to have an independent Kosovo, democratic, with a politically tolerant society and with a solid economy, integrated into the EU, the NATO and to continue with our good relations with the USA.

Ibrahim Rugova

We had a lot of international help especially from the EU and USA, which helped us to get out of this phase of emergency, to give some dynamism to Kosova.

Ibrahim Rugova

There are about 15 million Muslims in the EU. They face ignorance, insult and even persecution. They cannot be wished away. To impose Enlightenment freedoms is self-defeating. Anyway, the Muslims have their own enlightenment.

James Buchan

You can do business with America or the authoritarian dictators of Beijing, who oppress their own people, put millions of Muslims in concentration camps, and are rolling out a new and insidious colonialism around the world with their rapacious belt and road infrastructure program. Which side are you on, Britain? Canada? The EU? You choose.

Steve Hilton

Of course, the EU is not going to fall apart, but at best it will stagnate for the foreseeable future and we will be dealing with quite a lot of internal chaos.

Peter Mandelson

I do not share the half-in, half-out attitude to the EU of some in Britain. Britain’s place is in Europe.

Peter Mandelson

The fact is, as we leave the EU, Britain will be able to choose its own immigration system rather than having free movement with one part of the world and a managed system with elsewhere.

Matt Hancock

More and more people – Leavers and Remainers – from every region, every political party and every walk of life, are demanding a vote on the final Brexit deal before we leave the EU.

Layla Moran

I am so glad that as a party the Liberal Democrats are united in our resolve to fight for staying in the EU – it means we don’t need to waste time on internal infighting.

Jo Swinson

Yet in order to make sure the European social model keeps up with the pace of economic change that is now necessary, the EU must embrace a new approach to lawmaking.

John Hutton

More than 50% of significant new regulations that impact on business in the UK now emanate from the EU.

John Hutton

Our objective must therefore be to ensure EU better regulation contributes towards delivering a modern European Union which relentlessly focuses on building a dynamic and innovative economy equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

John Hutton

Having decisions made not in midnight deals but in the light of objective evidence and after consulting those who will be affected should itself provide some reassurance that the EU is trying to reform itself.

John Hutton

But we need to show that the EU can modernise itself, can adapt to the needs of its citizens, can take their views into account. That will be our ambition for the UK Presidency.

John Hutton

The appalling crackdown that we witnessed in Hama and other Syrian cities on 30 and 31 July only erode the regime’s legitimacy and increase resentment. In the absence of an end to the senseless violence and a genuine process of political reform, we will continue to pursue further EU sanctions.

William Hague

Today further EU targeted sanctions on Syria come into force. The message is clear and unambiguous: those responsible for the repression will be singled out and held accountable.

William Hague

The EU is not a country and it’s not going to become a country, in my view, now or ever in the future. It is a group of countries working together.

William Hague

The EU should be concentrated on adapting to globalisation and global competitiveness, not building more powerful centralised institutions in Brussels.

William Hague

People feel that in too many ways the EU is something that is done to them, not something over which they have a say.

William Hague

People feel that the EU is a one-way process, a great machine that sucks up decision-making from national parliaments to the European level until everything is decided by the EU. That needs to change.

William Hague

Turning away Turkey from the EU would be a great, long-term – a century-long – error by Europe.

William Hague

The EU has made it very clear that for frictionless trade and no tariffs on goods there is a mechanism for achieving that, but there are consequences. There are trade-offs that will have to happen.

Hilary Benn

We came to see the benefits for working people of common employment rights, guaranteed throughout the EU to prevent a race to the bottom. We worked together in practical ways to make cleaner beaches, protect the environment and ensure consumer rights.

Hilary Benn

Indeed, if all of humankind could cooperate, trade and work together as the nations of the EU have done, then there would be more peace, prosperity and progress on this earth.

Hilary Benn

And being in the EU has given Britain a stronger voice in the world. Britain leads in Europe, from trade to climate change, from good governance to debt relief for the poorest nations, and in turn Europe helps to lead the world.

Hilary Benn

Average tariffs between rich countries are only 3 per cent. But developing countries face tariffs of more than 300 per cent in the EU for meat and more than 200 per cent in the US for fruit and nuts. These need to come down dramatically.

Hilary Benn

Like most MPs, I campaigned and voted to remain in the EU. I was concerned that extricating ourselves from a relationship built up over 40 years would be complex and challenging and that the economic cost of increasing friction in our trade with the EU would be high.

David Gauke

A Canada-style deal for the whole of the UK results in a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. For that reason, it has never been acceptable to the EU without a permanent hard border down the Irish Sea.

David Gauke

The ‘EU in a Nutshell’ is a miscellany of facts and anecdotes about the system which rules us. It’s a book you can delve into in pursuit of a particular fact, or crack open for entertainment at virtually any page.

Daniel Hannan

If you want any hope of staying in the EU, or having a Brexit that doesn’t mean capitulation to ethno-nationalism, you’ve got to tie it to a wider vision of political and economic transformation.

Ash Sarkar

This is certainly not the first case in which a merger approved in one place hasn’t gone through in the other. There was a case last year where the merger between two EU companies was approved here and blocked in the U.S.

Mario Monti

It horrifies me how much it costs to put on shows now, mainly due to EU regulations. The freedom to be entrepreneurial is no longer there. It’s a massive business now.

Cameron Mackintosh

The EU will face problems similar to the US: an increasing gap between the citizens and decision makers in Brussels and a perceived or even real lack of democracy.

David Korten

The EU should have consolidated its different presences and purposes in Kosovo earlier.

Emma Bonino

U.S. companies earn more from their investments in the EU than in the rest of the world combined.

John Bruton

Hospitals don’t have enough beds, staff shortages are being exacerbated by the uncertainty surrounding what Brexit means for EU nationals and our ability to access new cancer treatments is under threat.

Layla Moran

Luckily for me, my views align with those of my constituents and party; the Liberal Democrats are unabashedly pro-European and are unapologetically up-front about our pursuit of a democratic way to stay in the EU.

Layla Moran

Outside the EU, studying abroad will become the reserve of the wealthy. Inside the EU, it’s an opportunity available to almost everyone.

Layla Moran

I am an optimist about the UK. We have been involved in trade with our European partners, which we will always be doing whatever this relationship is. We are a member of the EU. That gives us benefits. But we have to figure out where that is going. In the world, we are a global trader already.

Iain Duncan Smith

Europe needs an engine, and the Franco-German motor has provided that when the two nations have converged on important topics during critical periods. But that partnership shouldn’t be a directorate for other EU members.

Francois Hollande

I attach the greatest importance to an amplification of the peace efforts in the Middle East. I would also like to see a greater dialogue between the U.S. and the EU.

Francois Hollande

A jolt is necessary. Europe must reaffirm it values of freedom, solidarity, peace. The EU must be understood and controlled by its citizens. I will do everything to secure profound change rather than decline.

Francois Hollande

With the EU taking in ten more countries and adopting a new Constitution, organisations need more than ever intelligent professional help in engaging with the EU institutions.

Nick Clegg

If the euro zone doesn’t come up with a comprehensive vision of its own future, you’ll have a whole range of nationalist, xenophobic and extreme movements increasing across the European Union. And, frankly, questions about the British debate on EU membership will just be a small sideshow compared to the rise of political populism.

Nick Clegg

What we should be doing in the EU as a whole is more economic integration in the single market, rather than less.

Nick Clegg

The goal of the EU is to form a region of freedom, security and justice. Freedom in this connection cannot be just the freedom of the strong, but it must be combined with fraternity and equality.

Tarja Halonen

All of us in Parliament now have a responsibility to get on with the process of leaving the EU and securing a more prosperous future for Britain as an open, global, trading nation.

Liz Truss

Freedom of movement in Europe has been all but abandoned as a cause in British politics. Brexit was far more about freedom of movement than our exact trading relationship with the EU, and the electorate rejected it.

Owen Jones

Already, even before we have left the EU, Brexit is damaging our country, our economy, our society and our standing in the world – damage that will be worsened by the kind of ruinous no deal being pledged by some who aspire to become prime minister.

Betty Boothroyd

People in Scotland want to have Scotland in the UK and the UK in the EU, and that’s what the Liberal Democrats are arguing for.

Jo Swinson

If we get outside the EU, if we leave the EU system, we will be relieved of a huge amount of unnecessary regulation that is holding this country back. We will be able to set our own priorities, make our own laws and set our own tax policies to suit the needs of this country. We have a huge opportunity also to make people’s votes count for more.

Boris Johnson

The idea that the EU is somehow the guarantor of peace on the continent – that is in itself rash, in my view, and risks undermining the vital role of Nato.

Boris Johnson

As politicians we have to react to the fact that many people do not feel that they can relate to the EU.

Angela Merkel

I think that the EU with the Lisbon agenda has put the right emphasis on growth and employment.

Angela Merkel

Thus, the focus on this main political goal must become more visible in EU politics and to achieve this, we need a political impulse. It must be clear what the priorities on the agenda are.

Angela Merkel

It’s about mass immigration at a time when 21% of young people can’t find work. It’s about giving £50 million a day to the EU when the public finances are under great strain.

Nigel Farage

When people stand up and talk about the great success that the EU has been, I’m not sure anybody saying it really believes it themselves anymore.

Nigel Farage

We have a Conservative leader that believes in green taxes, that won’t bring back grammar schools, that believes in continuing with total open-door migration from eastern Europe and refuses to give us a referendum on the EU.

Nigel Farage

It’s the FSA and its plethora of EU bodies that’s failed.

Nigel Farage

Israel being condemned by the EU, which 66 years ago watched with glee as its Jews were being mass murdered. That is pretty rich.

Ben Stein

Today, hundreds of millions dwell in freedom, from the Baltic to the Adriatic, from the Western Approaches to the Aegean. And while we must never take this for granted, the first purpose of the European Union – to secure peace – has been achieved and we should pay tribute to all those in the EU, alongside Nato, who made that happen.

David Cameron

The EU must be able to act with the speed and flexibility of a network, not the cumbersome rigidity of a bloc. We must not be weighed down by an insistence on a one size fits all approach which implies that all countries want the same level of integration. The fact is that they don’t and we shouldn’t assert that they do.

David Cameron

There is a growing frustration that the EU is seen as something that is done to people rather than acting on their behalf. And this is being intensified by the very solutions required to resolve the economic problems.

David Cameron

I want completing the single market to be our driving mission. I want us to be at the forefront of transformative trade deals with the US, Japan and India as part of the drive towards global free trade. And I want us to be pushing to exempt Europe’s smallest entrepreneurial companies from more EU directives.

David Cameron

Our participation in the single market, and our ability to help set its rules is the principal reason for our membership of the EU. So it is a vital interest for us to protect the integrity and fairness of the single market for all its members.

David Cameron

People feel that the EU is heading in a direction that they never signed up to. They resent the interference in our national life by what they see as unnecessary rules and regulation. And they wonder what the point of it all is. Put simply, many ask ‘why can’t we just have what we voted to join – a common market?’

David Cameron

I think us leaving would have an enormous and bad effect on the rest of the EU. The EU would respond by deepening integration and becoming more of a ‘political project’. It would not only be damaging ourselves but also the kind of Europe we want.

David Cameron

I got shingles on the day of the EU referendum. It’s good to see that my stress has got worse as I’ve got older and that now there is a physical element to it!

Jon Richardson

It is a mystery why any Americans would support the concept of the EU.

Phyllis Schlafly

The European nations’ loss of sovereignty to the EU should be a warning to Americans.

Phyllis Schlafly

If the EU and the US pressured Israel for change and forced the end of the blockade, we might get somewhere. That pressure should also come culturally, with from without and within.

Robert Del Naja

Our national prosperity is built on our open borders. However, the reality is that if a points system is introduced in the UK it would be unavoidable for us in the Netherlands to implement similar proposals – and inevitable that many other EU countries would follow suit.

Mark Rutte

Whenever the debate moves on to hard numbers – our deficit with Europe, our surplus with the rest of the world, our Brussels budget contributions, the tiny part of our economy dependent on sales to the EU, the vast part subjected to EU regulation – Euro-enthusiasts quickly shift their ground and start harrumphing about influence.

Daniel Hannan

What is EU?

The European Union ( EU) is a political and economic union of 27 Member States mainly located in Europe. The members have a combined area of 4,233,255.3 km2 (1,634,469.0 sq mi) and an estimated total population of approximately 447 million.

The EU has developed an internal market through a standardized system of laws applicable in all Member States in these matters, and only in those cases where the Member States have agreed to act as one.

EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of citizens, products, services and resources within the internal market, enforce justice and home affairs legislation and preserve shared policies on trade, agriculture , fisheries and regional development.

Passport checks have been abolished for travel within the Schengen region. The Monetary Union was established in 1999, which entered into full force in 2002, and is made up of 19 EU Member States using the euro currency. The EU has also been described as a sui generis political body.

The EU and European citizenship were created when the Treaty of Maastricht came into force in 1993. The EU traces its history to the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the European Economic Community ( EEC) formed by the Treaty of Paris of 1951 and the Treaty of Rome of 1957.

The initial members of the so-called European Communities were the Inner Six: Belgium, France , Italy , Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. The Group and its predecessors have grown in size by the accession of new Member States and by the addition of policy areas to their remit.

The most recent major addition to the EU Constitution Framework, the Treaty of Lisbon, came into effect in 2009.The United Kingdom was the first Member State to leave the EU on 31 January 2020.

Following a referendum in 2016 , the United Kingdom declared its decision to leave and signed a withdrawal deal. The United Kingdom is in a transitional period until at least 31 December 2020, after which it remains subject to European legislation and part of the European single market and customs union.

Before that, three territories of Member States had left the EU or its predecessors, namely French Algeria (in 1962, on independence), Greenland (in 1985, after a referendum) and Saint Barthélemy (in 2012).

Containing some 5.8 per cent of the world ‘s population in 2020, the EU (excluding the United Kingdom) created a nominal gross domestic product ( GDP) of about US$ 15.5 trillion in 2019, accounting for approximately 18 per cent of global nominal GDP.

In fact, according to the United Nations Development Programme, all EU countries have a very high Human Development Index. The EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.

The EU has developed a role in external relations and defense through the Common Foreign and Security Policy. The Union operates permanent diplomatic missions around the world and is represented by the United Nations , the World Trade Organization, the G7 and the G20.
