It’s a cliche that music rises above it all, and it’s a cliche for a reason – it’s very often true.

Steven Wilson

What is Cliche?

A cliché, or cliché, is an phrase, concept, or feature of an artistic work that has become overused to the point of losing its original significance or impact, to the point of becoming trite or annoying, especially when it was considered significant or novel at some earlier time.

The concept has taken on a more specific sense in phraseology, referring to an word imposed by conventionalized linguistic use.

Throughout popular culture the word is also used for an imminent or predetermined behavior or concept based on a prior event. “Clichés,” which are usually pejorative, may or may not be valid.

These are myths but others are just facts and truisms. Clichés are also used, especially in fiction, for comic effect.

Many of the phrases now considered cliché were initially considered striking but lost their impact by overuse. Gérard de Nerval, French poet, once wrote, “The first man who compared a woman to a rose was a poet, the second, an imbecile.”

A cliché is often a vivid depiction of an abstraction which relies for effect on analogy or exaggeration, often derived from everyday experience.

This can be effective when used sparingly, but the use of a cliché in prose, speech, or argument is usually considered a mark of inexperience or a lack of originality.
