What is Liberalism ?

Liberalism is a philosophy of politics and morality based on freedom, the consent of government and equal rights.

Liberals take a wide variety of views, but they generally support free markets, free trade, restricted government, the rights of individuals (including civil and human rights), capitalism, democracy, lay people, sex equality , racial equality, internationalism, freedom of expression, press freedom and religious freedom.

Yellow is the most frequently liberalized political color. In the era of the Enlightenment when liberalism became popular among Western scientists and economists, Liberalism became a distinct movement.

Liberalism sought to substitute parliamentary democracy and the rule of law for the traditions of hereditary privilege, state religion, absolute monarchy, divine right of the Kings and conventional conservatism.

Instead of promoting free trade and free markets, the Liberals also ended mercantilist policies, royal monopolies and other obstacles to trade. A distinct tradition, based on the social contracts, that each individual has a natural right to life, freedom and property is often credited with the philosopher John Locke, and that governments must not violate those rights.

While the British Liberal tradition stressed the expansion of democracy, the French Liberalism emphasized the rejection of autoritarism and was linked to the construction of the nation. Leaders in 1688, 1776 and 1789 of the Glorious Revolution used revolutionary ideology to explain the armied overthrow of Royal dictatorship.

Particularly following the French Revolution, liberalism quickly began to spread. In Europe as well as South America, liberal governments were formed in the 19th century while they were established in the United States alongside republicanism.

It was used for attacking the political institution in Victorian Britain, appealing on behalf of the people towards science and reason. The periods of reform such as Tanzimat and al-Nahda and the rise of constitutionalism, nationalism and secularism were dominant during the 19th and early 20th centuries in the Ottoman Empire and Middle East.

These changes, together with others, contributed to a sense of crisis within Islam that continues to lead to Islamic revival. Before 1920, Communism, nationalism and socialism were the key political rivals of Liberalism, but liberalism was subsequently faced by the new theoretical threats of Fascism and Marxism-Leninism.

Throughout the 20th century, liberal ideas spread much further, throughout particular in Western Europe, as liberal democracy were the winner of the two world wars
