What is carving?

Carving is the act of using tools to shape something out of a material by scraping away portions of that material.

The technique can be applied to any material that is strong enough to hold a shape even when the pieces have been removed from it, and yet soft enough to scrape away the portions with the tools available.

Carving, as a means of making stone or wood sculpture, is distinct from methods that use soft and malleable materials such as clay, fruit and melted glass, which can be shaped into the desired shapes while soft and then hardened into that form.

Carving tends to require a lot more work than methods that use malleable materials.
