Ulrich Beck (15 May 1944 โ€“ 1 January 2015) was a well-known German sociologist and one of the most well-known social scientists in the world during his lifetime. His research concentrated on problems of uncontrollability, confusion and ambiguity in modern times, and he coined the words "risk society" and "second modernity" or "reflexive modernisation." He also sought to reverse regional viewpoints with a cosmopolitanism that accepts the interconnectedness of the global world that predominated in sociological investigations. He was a lecturer at Munich University and also held appointments at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Foundation (FMSH) in Paris, as well as at the London School of Economics.
